The Purge is about how the United States would be in the year of 2022 by having a nation that is reborn with new founding fathers of America. The government permits all criminal activity for twelve hours and makes it legal, including murder. The 911 system (hospitals, police officers, and firefighters) cannot be called for help in any moment of that period of time. The purpose of these actions are to get rid of the lower class people and maintain the upper class to sustain a high economic level while lowering crime rates throughout the rest of the year after the Purge. The Purge has a well-written storyline, has good actors, and is filmed outstandingly. However, the message and purpose of the movie portrays some of the negative effects and resemblance of society.
This video clip of the Emergency Broadcast System Announcement warns the public that the Purge is about to happen. Although the government accepts the annual Purge, they do not partake in it and are fully protected from all harm. Nevertheless, they are thankful for the Purge in able to better their economy by wiping out the poor. The government not being responsible for this, portrays a sense of selfishness and a massive betrayal to the nation. The people who are rich are safe as well and may take part in the Purge if desired. But the rest of society in the lower class suffer no matter what without having the government’s assistance.
This image right here is very powerful. The mask says “God” on it, which means that the purgers are the ones who control society in every annual Purge. Meaning, neither God is in actual control if anyone dies that day because it is up to them. However, this situation is one of the prime examples of how Americans may have this fear about the government and how it works with the public. There are many things that the government does for the nation, but at the same time, those decisions could hurt them. Some believe they make resolutions to benefit themselves anyway. It could either be beneficial or not for everybody. Everyone usually thinks they are supposed to help all of us in various ways and sustain the country. On the other hand, the Purge is the total opposite. In the United States, there is a portion of people who feel as if the government does not do much for them or as much as they would like. Most of the time, the lower class has this issue. Many of them think it is unfair that the government is not giving them the help they need, while those working in the government and the rich, remain on top of society’s pyramid. So, it seems like at the end of the day the government and the rich stay wealthy regardless while the poor stays poor or becomes poorer. It is viewed as a way of betrayal by some people who are part of the lower class. This creates tension and anxiety for those who are in that position.
The world has become more violent within time and as generations pass by. America has a high crime rate in many cities. According to www.CrimeinAmerica.net, “The violent crime category includes murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault.” In both of The Purge films, The Purge (2013) and The Purge: Anarchy (2014), there are huge amounts of crime scenes shown. The trailer of The Purge: Anarchy (2014) presents a preview of the corruption.
All of the purges are caused by individuals who have evil feelings, hatred inside about the lower class, and have criminal mentalities. Therefore, the film presents how crime can destroy a nation so quickly and create chaos all around. Not only are these just movies, they also send out a message to the people for a reason. These types of films present or give people a sense of imagination of how the nation would be if this were to really occur. It stimulates a lot of people’s minds. However, there have been many cases of people brutally mistreating and killing others based off hatred and discrimination. The Purge is an example of racism and the creators of it made it clear how certain beings are marked as being marginal or disposable. This is a factor in today’s world and its history. During the time of the Holocaust, according to www.history.com, there was a “mass murder of some 6 million European Jews by the German Nazi regime during the Second World War.” Adolf Hitler was the Nazi leader who was totally against Jews because he thought their race was inferior. He wanted to make a final resolution to obtain a pure German race. Everyone who was not part of the German race and who was not full-blooded, was sent to concentration camps. Many of those people died of starvation or disease.
A large amount of Jews were killed by gas chambers as well. This awful part of history shows how degrading Adolf Hitler was and everything he did during the time he was in power. It all presents the hatred and discrimination towards a certain kind or race of people, which makes the connection to how the Purge has the same aspect.
There are many people out there that have anger towards society. Therefore, when audiences such as those watch films like these, ideas get created in their minds. There are psychological effects that get embedded from these movies. Decisions and thoughts may be created in some individuals’ brains and might want to take those horrifying actions into our world in able to harm us.
There is a lot of hatred all across the globe that is portrayed in people’s very own eyes, the media, television, and even movies. The Purge films have aspects in which societal anxieties are shown that people have and may go through on a daily basis. Brutal violence and murder is seen, as well as presented on the news. Those who are in the lower class can relate more to the common anxiety the film depicts by showing the wipe-out of all of them. Those who are poor tend to live in low class neighborhoods. Therefore, since the crime rate is higher in those areas, more murders occur.
In The Purge: Anarchy (2014), there are several scenes that show these criminals covering their faces behind masks to hide their identity as they take out as many individuals as they possibly can. However, in some scenes, the leader of the Purge does not cover his face and shows that he does not care about people knowing who he truly is and that he is proud of this violent movement. He is the number one member who does the most killings and brutality murders many people. An example of a group that kills out of hatred is ISIS.
This whole squad was born from the Al Qaeda and according to www.abcnews.go.com, “It now terrorizes large swaths of Syria and Iraq.” They murder people who live all across many towns among their area and unarmed people who are innocent. They kill those who do not follow their same beliefs. ISIS wants to make a statement that they are in control and that they have power over any other individual outside of their clan. This shows all the extreme hate that this group has towards others, the large amount of weapons they have to commit the crimes, and the amount of people that participate in this brutality. The Purge films portray a wide variety of traits that ISIS has. The ones who purge want to feel empowered by taking people’s lives and especially those who have no fault; the only fault considered for the purgers is that they are poor and should not belong in society because of economic purposes. Clearly, those are signs of odium. In the majority of the scenes in both of the movies, they portray all the types of weapons they have to commit these crimes; therefore, it creates a comparison with ISIS in that way as well.
